Among the island palaces of Lake Pichola Jag Mandir is a prominent one. The name of Maharana Jagat Singh I is associated with the mandir. The Jag Mandir is on the southern side of the lake. The palace of Jag Mandir had its construction completed by Rana Karan Singh. Jag Mandir is not only a spectacular sight. The historical significance of the palace unfold the fact that the site contains a place which was made to provide shelter and safety to Prince Khurram who is known in history as Shah Jahan.
The legend of the Jag Mandir tell us that the Mughal prince was treated by his host Rana Karan Singh in a magnificent way. The host even build a pavilion of dome shape on this island of the Lake Pichola which was embellished with unique interior decorations. It is also legendary that the decorations of the palace act as the inspiration to Shah Jahan for the wonderful architecture of the Taj Mahal. A throne was also ordered by Rana for his guest along with a mosque for the prayers of the prince. The palace of Jag Mandir was build of sandstone and include the breathtaking designs of agate, jasper and onyx.
The Jag Mandir palace got its extension in the age of Jagat Singh. Jagat Singh added to the palace a woman's quarter which is known as zenana. Finally, the name of Jag Mandir was given to the site which bear the presence of the name of Jagat Singh.
