| Shri Raghunathji Temple |
Situated in the southernmost point of Aravalli range, Mount Abu is a pleasant exception to the arid landscape of Rajasthan. Blessed by nature's abundance, Mount Abu is quite a contrast to the desert landscape; it is like an oasis among the sands. The road to Mount Abu is an uphill drive that looks over an arid landscape. The entire road is dotted with huge pieces of stones which have been curved into weird shapes by the high velocity winds of the desert. According to a local legend, 'Abu' stands for the son of the Himalayas and derives its name from Arbuada, the powerful serpent who saved 'Nandi, the bull of lord Shiva. Before it became a Jain pilgrimage center, Mount Abu had been a retreat of many great Hindu sages and seers, the most important being Rishi Vashistha. It is said that Rishi Vasishtha created four agnikula clans of Rajputs from a fire pit by performing a 'yajna' or fire sacrifice. The 'yajna was performed beside a spring emerging from a rock shaped like the head of a cow. Both Jain and Hindus have their own places of worship at Mount Abu. The greatest of the Jain architectural splendors, the Dilwara Jain temples are located here. Besides that, there are many important Hindu temples as well. These include the Gaumukh Temple, The Raghunathji Temple and the Adhar Devi Temple.
Among Hindu temples, the Raghunathji temple is of major importance. The temple is located near the picturesque Nakki Lake. The temple is dedicated to Shri Ram who is also known as Raghunath, as he belonged to the 'Raghu vamsa', or the "raghu" dynasty. It is a very sacred place of pilgrimage at Mount Abu. The temple has a beautiful deity of Lord Raghunath. This deity was placed here by the famous Hindu preacher Ramananda, in about 14th Century AD. Ramananda was a saint who belonged to the era of the Bhakti movement who was a great devotee of Rama or Raghunathji. He wandered over the whole of India to spread the message of love and unity among religions he moved throughout India. After reaching Mount Abu he stumbled upon the site near Nakki Lake and decided to set up a temple dedicated to Raghunathji, and thus was formed the present day Shri Raghunathji temple.
