| Gaumukh Temple |
Mount Abu is a picturesque hill station located in the southernmost point of the Aravalli hills. It is a pleasant exception to the arid landscape of Rajasthan. Verdant with a lush green forest teeming with wild life, mount Abu is a stark contrast to the deserts of Rajasthan. It is a place abundant in natural beauty. But Mount Abu has a lot to it other than the natural beauty. It houses few of the most sacred places of pilgrimage in India. Both Jain and Hindus have their own places of worship situated at Mount Abu. The greatest of the Jain architectural splendors, the Dilwara Jain temples are located here. Besides that, there are ,many important Hindu temples as well. These include the Gaumukh Temple, The Raghunathji Temple and the Adhar devi Temple.
Among the Hindu temples, the Gaumukh temple is of major importance. The Gaumukh Temple is located on the Abu Road side of the Mount Abu. According to a legend, Rishi Vasishtha created four agnikula clans of Rajputs from a fire pit by performing a 'yajna' or fire sacrifice. The 'yajna was performed beside a spring emerging from a rock shaped like the head of a cow, situated near Mount Abu. Thus the name "gaumukh" is attributed to that place. Presently the rock shaped like the head of a cow has been replaced by the mouth of a marble cow. The small stream now flows from the mouth of that marble cow and falls into a tank, and the name "Gaumukh", still persists! There is a marble statue of 'Nandi', the sacred bull of Lord Shiva. The legendary fire pit or Agnikund, still exists on the shrine of the temple. The temple has an image of Vasishtha flanked by images of Rama and Krishna on both sides.
The Gaumukh temple is situated at a distance of about 5 Kilometers from the Hanuman Mandir, amidst the lush green valley of Mount Abu. To reach the temple one needs to climb down about 750 steps through the valley.
