Mount Abu is a picturesque hill station located in the southernmost point of the Aravalli hills. It is a pleasant exception to the arid landscape of Rajasthan. The 'yajna was performed beside a spring emerging from a rock shaped like the head of a cow, situated near Mount Abu. Thus the name "gaumukh" is attributed to that place. Presently the rock shaped like the head of a cow has been replaced by the mouth of a marble cow. The small stream now flows from the mouth of that marble cow and falls into a tank, and the name "Gaumukh", still persists! There is a marble statue of 'Nandi', the sacred bull of Lord Shiva. The legendary fire pit or Agnikund, still exists on the shrine of the temple. The temple has an image of Vasishtha flanked by images of Rama and Krishna on both sides.

The Gaumukh temple is situated at a distance of about 5 Kilometers from the Hanuman Mandir, amidst the lush green valley of Mount Abu. To reach the temple one needs to climb down about 750 steps through the valley.
