Mount Abu, a picturesque hill station verdant with lush green forests is an oasis in the arid land of Rajasthan. Situated in the southernmost tip of the Aravalli Hills, the place has a cool climate unlike the rest of Rajasthan. The altitude of the plateau (1220m) and the rich cover of flora lend it the pleasant climate. The road to Mount Abu is an uphill drive that looks over an arid landscape. The entire road is dotted with huge pieces of stones which have been curved into weird shapes by the high velocity winds of the desert. According to a local legend, 'Abu' stands for the son of the Himalayas and derives its name from Arbuada, the powerful serpent who saved 'Nandi, the bull of lord Shiva. Before it became a Jain pilgrimage center, Mount Abu had been a retreat of many great Hindu sages and seers, the most important being Rishi Vashistha. It is said that Rishi Vasishtha created four agnikula clans of Rajputs from a fire pit by performing a 'yajna' or fire sacrifice. The 'yajna was performed beside a spring emerging from a rock shaped like the head of a cow. Thus the name "gaumukh" is attributed to that place.
Mount Abu is more than just a summer retreat. It is a holy site of pilgrimage for the Jains as well as the Hindus. It houses one of the marvelous pieces of Indian architecture, the Dilwara Jain Temples. Besides these magnificent temples, Mount Abu is also the home of Gaumukh temples, Adhar Devi temple and Raghunathji Temple. There is a lot to Mount Abu besides these places of religious significance. There are several picnic spots and trekking routes close to Mount Abu. It is a beautiful place strewn with gardens and parks. The other tourist spots include such beautiful places as the Sunset point and the Honeymoon Point. The trekking routes on Mount Abu include Trevor's Tank, Achalgarh and Gurusikhar, the highest point of Mount Abu.
