| Jantar Mantar |
The meaning of the Sanskrit word ‘Jantar Mantar’ is ‘Magical Devices’ and a close inspection will tell you why it has been named in that way. The huge masonry instruments are placed here to measure ‘the harmony of the heavens’. Sawai Raja Jai Singh II planned for this outstanding work of architecture. Once the implementation of that planning got started it was finished within seven years, from1728 to 1734. There is an instrument in this observatory for each function to give an accurate reading.

‘Samrat Yantra’ is a huge sundial that looks exactly like a triangular architecture that reads hours and minutes. The arc built on the left side of the structure features the time from sunrise to midday. The arc built on the right side shows time from midday to sunset. Time can be told by observing the shadow. The sundials are built on latitude 27o north. The time is adjusted to the reading of the Indian standard Time (IST). You have to add anything between 1 minute 15 seconds to 32 minutes to the time shown by the Jantar Mantar on accordance with the time of the year and the solar position.
The ‘Dhruva Yantra’ locates the position of 12 Zodiac signs and the Pole Star during night. ‘Human Breath’ is considered to be the traditional unit of measurement that starts with the smallest unit calculated to be 6 seconds duration. 4 breaths or 24 seconds of this scale equals to 1 pal, 60 pals or 24 minutes equals to 1 ghadi and 60 ghadis or 24 hours equals to a day. ‘Narivalya Yantra’ is a distinct kind of sundial consisting of two dials, the first one facing south shows the time when the sun is in the southern hemisphere or from 21 September to 21 March. Another dial faces towards north and reads time for the rest of the year. Apart from these one can explore the observer’s seat, Kranti Yantra, Raj Yantra or the King of Instruments, Unnsyhsmsa yantra, Chakra yantra and the Disha yantra.
