jaigarh Fort

The majestic Jaigarh Fort is standing at a distance of around 15 kms from Jaipur. This fort is also called the ‘Victory Fort’. Jaigarh Fort stands amidst the thorn-scrub hills that convey a stern dry look to this forbidding Fort. While going to the Jaigarh Fort from the high road that reaches the main gate, the Dungar Darwaza, one cannot help but admiring the mysteriously beautiful view of the city below.

The Jaigarh fort was built mainly for the defense of Ajmer. So this fort, unlike most palaces and forts of Jaipur is quite simply designed. The Jaigarh Fort has the ditch and all the features that can be expected from a big citadel.

Jaivana, which is the world’s largest cannon on wheels, is the highlight of the tourists visiting Jaigarh Fort. This cannon, Jaivana was built in Jaigarh’s own foundry in 1720. Many people say that the cannon was used only once and the ball fell around some 35kms away on a village. But historians are quite doubtful about the fact. According to the researchers this cannon actually has been fired at least a couple of times.

There are a number of wide water channels flowing on the side of the Jaigarh Fort that were made of a rainwater harvesting system. There are around 3 underground tanks in the fort. The largest one of these tanks can store around 60, 00,000 gallons of water. There is an interesting story heard about this tank. The story is like that, The tank contained hidden treasure. Indian Government even searched for it and did not find it at all.

While on the tour of Jaigarh Fort, you can have a look at the armory and the museum of the Jaigarh Fort. This warehouse consists of many swords, shields, guns, muskets and also a cannon ball weighing 50kg. The old photographs of two of Jaipur’s Maharajas, Sawai Bhawani Singh and Major General Man Singh II are on display. Both of them were senior officers in the Indian Army. The Museum is full of photographs, of Maharajas, royal people, buildings and processions and even a circular pack of cards and other relics of the past.
