Hawa Mahal

Rajasthan is more or less the open air museum that can be regarded as the documentation of the prowess and velour of the Rajput kings that constantly resisted attacks from outside and other parts of India. ‘Hawa Mahal’ is the architectural wonder located in Jaipur that has almost become the face of Jaipur.

Maharaja Sawai Pratap Singh built the Hawa Mahal in 1799. ‘Hawa Mahal’ literally means the ‘Palace of Wind’ and it has always remained one of the major landmarks in Jaipur. Hawa Mahal is an inseparable part of City Palace. Being an extension of the Zenana palace or the women’s chambers, Hawa Mahal is located at quite a distance away from the main complex. The five storey building of Hawa Mahal is an unusual kind of architectural work designed by Lal Chand Usta. This is an example of a striking example of Rajput artistry built of red sand stone. The beautiful outlining of the ‘Hawa Mahal’ with white borders enhances the beauty of this architectural marvel. The motifs on the body of the five storey building are painted in quick lime. The monument is mainly famous because of the panoramic view one can enjoy from this building. Even the Jaipur city with all its roads avenues, lanes and by-lanes, crowds in the bazaar is visible from here. Initially, this part of the palace was made with the aim to let the royal ladies have a view of the everyday life in Jaipur without being visible to others.

Hawa Mahal appears to the onlookers more like a wall than a palace. The structure of this architecture is like a pyramid. Tier after tier of 953 small casements are mounted one after another to built this part of the palace. The lattice work or ‘Jali’ work on the small pink windows are like ornaments on the body of this palace. The small balconies used to facilitate the city-watchers. The arched roofs and the hanging cornices were meticulously decorated and carved to make each of them individual piece of art. Cool breeze or ‘hawa’ entered through these tiny windows in the hottest months also.

You can enter Hawa Mahal from the City Palace, through gorgeously decorated majestic door that opens to a huge courtyard. The courtyard is encircled by a two- storeyed building from three sides. That building houses a tiny archeological museum. Only the eastern wing of the building has 3 additional stories on it. Each of the stories barely has a single room. The building is built on a high platform.
