City Palace & Maharaja Sawai Man Singh II Museum was built in the capital of Rajasthan, Jaipur. The City Palace, Jaipur or the main palace is a majestic blend of traditional Rajasthani art and Mughal architecture. The wide palace complex occupies almost one seventh of the walled city of Jaipur. Maharaja Jai Singh II of the Kachhwaha clan of Rajputs originally built this majestic piece of architecture. His successors did many additions to the palace complex.

The whole palace complex is divided into several courtyards, well-maintained gardens and buildings. The City Palace & Maharaja Sawai Man Singh II Museum houses numerous palatial structures, such as, Chandra Mahal, Mubarak Mahal, Badal Mahal, Shri Govind Dev Temple and of course the City Palace Museum.
‘Mubarak Mahal’ is built in the first courtyard by Maharaja Madho Singh II in the late 19th century. The word Mubarak Mahal means the ‘Auspicious Palace’. This palace houses the textile section of the Maharaja Sawai Man Singh II Museum. The Mahal has a statly gateway with a grand door made of brass that opens to a large courtyard. There is the Diwan-I-Khas or ‘Hall of Private Audience’. The two large silver vessels that are also considered to be the largest in the world are kept here. These vessels hold a Guinness Book of World Records for being the largest silver vessels. These were used for carrying holy Ganga water for Madho Singh II’s use on his travel to England. Apart from these the marvelous Afghan and Persian carpets, miniature paintings, astronomical manuscripts in Persian and Sanskrit are on display in the ‘Diwan-E-Aam’ or the ‘Hall of Public Audience’. At the other corner of the palace is the gateway Ridhi Sidhi Pol. The four small doorways are decorated with intricate motifs depicting the all four seasons.
To the north-west of City Palace & Maharaja Sawai Man Singh II Museum lies the stately seven storeyed ‘Chandra Mahal’ or the Moon Palace. This is the home of the present Maharaja of Jaipur, Bhavani Singh. This part of the palace overlooks the well-maintained gardens and the majestic beauty of City Palace & Maharaja Sawai Man Singh II Museum. Beautiful paintings, flower decorations, mirrored walls and intricate ornamentation on the ceilings in the traditional style enhances the beauty of this historical palace. Each storey of the palace had a distinct name of its own. The ground and first floor of the Chandra Mahal house the Maharaja Sawai Man Singh II Museum.
