Dungarpur, popularly known as the "city of hills" is a picturesque town perched on the hill tops of the Aravalli mountains. It is situated about 110 Kilometers south of Udaipur. It was established in the 13th century by a faction of the Mewar dynasty who had decided to split their ways. Even after splitting their ways the cousins came together to fight a number of battles to ward off invasions of the enemies. Dungarpur reached its prime under the governance of the Guhilot Ahara Suryavanshi Rajputs. This clan of Rajputs originated from the main dynasty of Chittorgarh. Dungarpur is famous for its palaces painted with beautiful frescoes. It houses such marvels of Rajasthani architecture like the Deo Somnath temple, Udai Bilas Palace and Juna Mahal. Dungarpur also has a splendid lake by the name of Gaib Sagar Lake, which houses the famous shrine of Srinathji.
One of the most interesting places you can visit in Dungarpur is the Rajmata Devendra Kunwar State Museum and Cultural Center. It is a museum maintained by the Government of Rajasthan and is also known as Government Archeological museum. The museum was opened for the general public in the year 1988.
| the main attraction of the Rajmata Devendra Kunwar State Museum and Cultural Center is its sculpture gallery. This particular gallery focuses on the history of Vagad Pradesh. The erstwhile Vagad Pradesh was constituted of the present areas of Dungarpur, Banswara and tehsil Kherwara of present Udaipur district. The museum also has a wonderful collection of portraits of the former Maharajas of Dungarpur state. It also has an enviable collection of photographs which has tremendous historical relevance.
